Cochrane Fire Services' Santa Fun Run is back again this year, and bigger than ever.

COCHRANE— Santa Claus is coming to town this year, but he will be riding on a big red firetruck rather than his usual reindeer drawn sleigh.

The Santa Claus Fun Run, a community favourite, is back again this year, and bigger than ever on Christmas Eve.

Instead of the usual single firetruck, Cochrane Fire Services will be rolling out three fire engines, all decked out in lights.

Senior firefighter Dave Levisky said that members of the fire service met with each other, and in light of the particularly difficult year facing the Cochrane community, decided that they would go ahead with the event.

“Given all the things that are happening, it’s probably the best time to do it,” Levisky said. “It was kind of what kicked us forward … If we can set off everyone’s Christmas Eve with Santa going by, we thought it would be a great way to start the holiday season.”

Mayor Jeff Genung will tag along for the ride, alongside Santa, ambulances and members of Cochrane RCMP.

This year due to COVID-19, there will be a few changes to the event.

Normally the event includes 15-minute stops for visits and chats with Santa at each location and Cochrane Fire Service members collect donations for the food bank and hand out candy canes.

This year, the parade will spend double the amount of time in each neighbourhood and forgo the collection of donations and the visits with Santa.

“We just want people to be cognizant of the COVID restrictions and group gatherings,” Levisky said. “Just take the opportunity to enjoy the experience and have a great holiday season.”
