The Andy Kirby Legacy AED Charity Golf Tournament will be held this Friday, Sept. 23 at the Cochrane Golf Course.
Organizers are raising funds to place more AED's (automated external defibrillators) in Cochrane.
Last year on Sept. 23, Andy Kirby had a massive heart attack on the ninth hole of the Cochrane Golf Course. Residents of the adjacent homes overlooking the greens saw that he was in trouble, called first responders, and rushed to his aid.
“If it wasn't for the heroic efforts of his ‘9th hole angels’ (residents, staff of the Cochrane Golf Course and the first responders) he would not be with us today,” said retired paramedic Brian Winter, who is organizing the tournament.
The Cochrane EMS Citizen Action Group is the original organizer of the tournament.
The Cochrane Golf Course had an AED that was used to get Andy's heart started and stabilize him for transport to the hospital. He has made a remarkable recovery and is already golfing again.
The $150 per-person entry fee includes a day of golf, the use of a cart, access to a miniature golf course (optional), barbecue lunch, and pub-style buffet after the round.
There will be prizes, silent auction, giveaways and a short presentation after the tournament.
Organizers are still looking for last-minute sponsors and golfers. Sponsoring a hole costs $500. Sponsors can be at the hole or have signage there from 1 to 4 p.m. on Friday.
Entrants can sign up as a single golfer or a team of four. Players signed up as singles will be teamed up randomly into foursomes.
