Hot weather and poor air quality will affect the Cochrane area this week, with some of the hottest days of the summer coming up in the next couple of days.

Environment Canada has described the current weather forecast as a "pro-longed heat event" and has predicted today's temperature to range between 28 to 38 C. According to forecasts, overnight lows will remain warm, ranging from the mid-teens to low 20s, and will not provide much relief from the daytime heat.

There is a 30 per cent chance of showers tonight and a daytime high of 32 C is predicted for Wednesday. Environment Canada predicts more showers for Thursday, with a daytime high of 19 C. The weekend looks to be a touch cooler than what Airdrie residents have seen the last few days, with the average high for Friday and Saturday being 21 C. Hotter temperatures will return on Sunday, with an expected high of 26 C.

Environment Canada said thick smoke in parts of the province may cause daytime highs to be a few degrees cooler than forecast over the coming days. The combination of heat and very poor air quality will cause an increased health risk to those outside for prolonged periods.
