The Cochrane & Area Humane Society (CAHS) has officially opened two private off-leash dog parks just north of Cochrane.
Sadie’s Nature Park spans 8.6 acres in an L-shaped layout, offering scenic mountain views and plenty of space for dogs to roam freely. Nearby, Paws in the Park provides a more intimate, one-acre setting designed for canine companions to play and explore in a secure environment.
“We are thrilled to open these beautiful parks to the community,” said Tracy Keith Harvie, executive director of CAHS. “This project has been a labour of love, and we can’t wait to share these dedicated spaces where dogs can safely enjoy the outdoors.”
The vision for the parks had been in development for over a decade. In 2024, thanks to support from the Calgary Foundation’s John Bowlen Legacy Fund, CAHS purchased the land for $700,000 and began transforming the property into the dog-friendly space it is today.
“Behind the scenes, our volunteer-based committee took on the enormous task of turning vision into reality,” Harvie said during her opening remarks. “We’re proud of their work—turning bare land into what you see here today.”
Sadie’s Nature Park is named in honour of Sadie, the Bowlen family’s beloved dog. The site fulfills two key goals of the foundation:
- To offer a private, enriching park experience for the public
- To provide a therapeutic outdoor space for shelter dogs
“We have not only met but exceeded our expectations,” said Harvie. “Looking ahead, we envision expanding our outdoor spaces to better serve animals in our care, meet growing community needs, and support our evolving programs.”
Both parks are located at 43128 Township Road 274 in Rocky View County. To book or learn more, visit: www.cochranehumane.ca/programs-services/private-off-leash.
