Cochranites are invited to one of the longest running traditions to mark the coming of the holiday season Nov. 26, with the return of the annual Cochrane Light Up.
The popular event has been held in Cochrane for 38 years, and is now returning as an in-person event after being placed on hold for the last two years due to COVID-19 restrictions.
From 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., the streets of the historic downtown Cochrane will be blocked off from vehicular traffic and locals are invited to come down and visit.
Chair of the Cochrane Light Up society, Stephanie Shelstead, said the event will host stilt walkers, local businesses giving away goodies, prizes to be won, and even an early visit from Santa Claus with members of the Cochrane Activettes to kick off the “Share Your Christmas” campaign.
“So, we’re asking everybody if they can bring one un-wrapped gift toy or children’s clothing, when they come to drop it off in the Santa Claus area in the Rexall Parking lot,” Shelstead said.
To conclude the night, guests will be able to watch a light and pyrotechnic show coordinated to music at 7:30 p.m.
Despite not being able to hold it for the last two years, Shestead anticipates the attendance for this year’s event will be larger than previous years, which saw around 12,000 attendees.
“We ordered 12,000 hotdogs, so we hope we have enough,” Shelstead said.
Shelstead added the event is still looking for sponsors and the event is always looking for volunteers. Anyone interested in getting involved is asked to please email [email protected].
