Cochrane news year in review: July

July saw a busy year in for residents in Cochrane with several events and Canada Day celebrations taking place in town.
  • Community groups in Cochrane were finding it more difficult to recruit volunteers for local events in July. The Cochrane and Area Events Society even put out a last-minute appeal for more volunteers.
  • Five students from Morley Community School launched The Îyethka Trading Co. clothing company to represent the three bands, language and the culture of Stoney Nakoda First Nation. The students helped produce locally crafted hoodies and T-shirts.
  • The month-long Bike-A-Thon fundraiser held in June ended by raising $27,000 and the winner of the friendly competition between Mayor Jeff Genung and Banff-Airdrie MP Blake Richards ended with Richards clinching the top spot by raising $2,082 for the project.
  • Airdrie-Cochrane MLA Peter Guthrie vocalized his support for United Conservative Party leadership hopeful Danielle Smith in a video he posted on his Facebook page. Guthrie was the first sitting UCP MLA to express his support for Smith in the party’s leadership race.
  • The $300,000 inclusive playground in Cochrane’s Centennial Park was unveiled publicly on July 11.
  • The Cochrane Legion Branch No. 15 hosted the Memory Café to give people with dementia and their caregivers a safe place to connect with others living with the same circumstances.
  • The Rotary Club of Cochrane, Lions Club, Bow RiversEdge Campground and Family Community Support Services partnered up to offer relief to 60 to 65 Ukrainian families who had settled in Cochrane.
  • The Wings Over Springbank airshow returned to Springbank Airport after a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • A 56-year-old female passenger involved in a collision between a motorcycle and a deer just outside of Cochrane on July 19 succumbed to her injuries.
  • Cochrane Fire launched their six-week ‘Be Summer Safe’ campaign by sharing weekly safety tips via the Town of Cochrane’s website and social media.
  •  JB Owen and Peter Giesin from Vancouver stopped through Cochrane during their 10,000-kilometre journey to St. John’s N.L., for the Cross-country Ignite Humanity bike tour.
  • The Mid-Sized Cities Mayor’s Caucus, chaired by Mayor Genung, sought a more fair approach to infrastructure funding when Alberta’s Local Government Fiscal Framework comes into effect in 2024.
  • Danielle Smith’s United Conservative Party leadership campaign came to Ducks on the Roof pub in Cochrane.
