The SLS Centre says Cochrane is among the top 50 of Canada's most active communities following results from the 2024 ParticipACTION Community Challenge.

The SLS Centre proved that they could really get the community moving, after their recent announcement of Cochrane’s selection as one of the top 50 finalists in the 2024 ParticipACTION Community Challenge.

Through this, it demonstrates Cochrane’s dedication to promoting physical activity, and also places the town in the running for a grand prize of $100,000.

The nationwide initiative aims to encourage Canadians to get moving while also recognizing Canada’s most active communities.

Last month, Cochranites embraced the challenge by simply getting active in the community in various ways. CEO of the SLS Centre Erin Wagner said she is proud by the community’s efforts.

“As a leader of recreation in our community, we are proud to have Cochrane named to the top 50 in Canada,” Wagner said. “Physical activity is critical to our overall health, and we love the sense of belonging moving together creates.”

Highlights from Cochrane’s participation include 56,015 participates attending 140 different initiatives, programs, and events. The SLS Centre added that youth involvement played a significant role, with several kids and teens participating in daily physical activity and events.

Though Cochrane’s participation, the SLS Centre believes that this shows Cochrane’s commitment to health, while also highlighting its collaborative spirit.

“We couldn’t have achieved this without the incredible support and participation of Cochrane,” said Wagner. “This accomplishment belongs to each person who participated in an activity and motivated others to join in.”

The results will be announced on July 22, but the town is already a winner, having received a spirit award for engagement.

Though the new recreation opportunities coming to town via an inclusive accessible multi-sport court sponsored by Jumpstart, more inclusive-use pathways, and upgrades underway at the SLS, there are more opportunities for Cochrane to embrace a more vibrant and active future.
