COCHRANE— Cochrane RCMP arrived on the scene of a devastating accident just after midnight on Friday (Dec. 4) after receiving multiple complaints of erratic driving on Highway 1.
Initial reports stated that a man had stolen several items from a store on Highway 40 before fleeing the scene in a grey Dodge Ram on Highway 1.
From that point, complaints were made that of a grey Dodge Ram driving erratically, heading westbound in the eastbound lane on Highway 1.
While investigating the reports, RCMP was notified that the truck had collided with a semi-truck near Range Road 33.
The two occupants of the grey Dodge were treated for minor injuries, one of whom was transported to hospital, while the semi-truck driver sustained no injuries.
The driver of the Dodge Ram has not been located, but RCMP continues to search.
“The details that we have at the moment are that it was a male driver, but we’re still investigating,” said Cnst. Jennifer Brewer of the Cochrane RCMP.
Brewer noted that the RCMP was not exactly clear on how the driver fled the scene of the accident, but are investigating as though the driver fled on foot.
“We did investigate as though they left on foot, but we were unable to locate the driver, so we couldn’t say 100 per cent,” she said.
Brewer noted that the initial reports that came in were that an intoxicated male was responsible for the thefts, but the RCMP is still working to establish continuity between those reports and the scene of the accident.
