COCHRANE— Cochrane RCMP has laid charges against an individual after receiving false reports of a crime in progress.
On April 9, Cochrane RCMP received a call from the Calgary Police Service reporting that an individual had made several calls to police, claiming that they were in danger and hiding in a closet in a residence in Calgary.
After searching the home, Calgary Police determined that the individual was not there and was not in danger.
Cochrane RCMP was asked to follow up, and located the likely complainant in the Sunset subdivision in Cochrane. After obtaining a judicial authorization to enter the home, RCMP members located the accused individual hiding inside.
The investigation indicated that the calls were allegedly fabricated.
The Cochrane RCMP have charged Cherry Lee Dietrich age 38 of Cochrane with one count of Public Mischief contrary to section 140(2) of the Criminal Code.
“Making false reports to the police is a serious offence,” says Cpl. Troy Savinkoff of the Cochrane RCMP. “Fictitious calls not only take our officers from other very important tasks; it also presents unnecessary risk to the police and public as officers try to help those who they believe are in danger.”
Dietrich remains in custody until her next court appearance on April 27, 2021.
