Cochranites can meet the gears that let the Rotary Club of Cochrane wheels turn at the Rotary in Action Event on May 30.
Residents can meet these local Rotarians at the Cochrane Public Library from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and learn more about Rotary at the same time.
Sue Carpenter Parnell, director of membership for Cochrane Rotary, said the event is simply to spread awareness on who they are and what they do in the community.
“Last year, we went to the farmers market, and we did a public survey to find out what people knew about Rotary, the things we did, and who we are,” Parnell explained. “It was very interesting. We had 114 surveys completed, and it was very apparent when we looked at the results that people really didn’t know very much about us and there were some misconceptions.”
Parnell said Cochrane Rotary decided that they would do something about this, and decided on Rotary in Action as a means to showcase their different committees and initiatives in the community, while also giving locals the chance to meet Rotarians first-hand.
Parnell added that there will be a few speakers who will discuss topics like the Bow Rivers Edge Campground, the trail that will link Calgary and Canmore, the Rotary International project in Belize, the New Generations Youth project, the Early Act Club at Glenbow School, and the Monumental Tournament of Aces Golf Tournament.
“We will also have an address from our current president, Monica Walker, and then we will round off with talking about membership,” Parnell said.
With growing membership, Parnell said this is also a good chance for Cochranites to see if Rotary is a good fit for them. Overall, Parnell said this is a great way for Cochrane to learn more about Rotary in a casual setting.
Parnell invites everyone to attend the event. She asks anyone who is interested in attending to please register online via www.rotarycochrane.ca.
“There’s no reason why people can’t just turn up, and there will be coffee and cake,” Parnell said. “We will just have to wait and see, but we would just love for people to come. If not, we will be eating a lot of cake.”
