The Cochrane Water Ninjas return to Cochrane with outstanding results, after placing second overall at the 2024 Canadian Pool Lifesaving Championships.
The event took place at the Saanich Commonwealth Pool in B.C. from June 7 to 9. A total of 136 swimmers from 12 different clubs participated, and The Water Ninjas boasted a healthy presence with 21 swimmers aged 15 to 54.
Lifesaving Sport simulates real-life rescue situations to promote water safety, fitness, and lifesaving skills. It includes several events and challenges that test the speed, endurance, and proficiency in a swimmer’s rescue techniques.
This year, the team collected 27 gold, 15 silver, and 15 bronze medals, which improved from last year’s third-place finish.
Highlights of the meet included the 15 to 18-year-old swimmers who won the Combined Youth Team Award for the highest point score. Additionally, the men’s youth team won their division, and the women’s youth team finished second overall.
In terms of swimmers, Oliver Johnson was named the top point scorer in the men’s youth division, Danica Fisher finished third in the women’s youth division, and Alana Martens finished third in the open divisions.
In addition to their success, three girls and three boys were selected to represent Team Canada at the Orange Cup in the Netherlands in December 2024.
Water Ninjas head coach, Alexx Diep, said that everyone proud of what the team accomplished this year.
“Improving our ranking to second in all of Canada is a testament to our athletes’ commitment to training and love of the sport,” Diep said. “We come home victorious, proud and grateful for the support we’ve received from our village of people in Cochrane.”
