COCHRANE— The Town of Cochrane Council has voted to adjust the water consumption rate system to help residents save money during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Consumption Charges for Residential Premises from April 1 to June 30 will be adjusted to reflect more people are at home to prevent the spread of the virus— This has resulted in residents using more water in their residents.
The first tier, the amount of water needed for the basic necessities of life, will be raised to “20 cubic metres” per month. It was originally set at the “First 15 cubic metres” per month.
The change will reduce the consumption charge to $1.22/cubic metre from $1.72/cubic metre for water used between 15 and 20 cubic metres.
The Towns estimates that typically around 22 per cent of residential units fall within the tier one consumption rates. This number is expected to increase due to the number of people working from home raising this number to approximately 40 per cent.
The second tier threshold will be raised to “the next 20 to 30 cubic metres.”
