The Town of Cochrane is asking residents to be more bear aware after a black bear was spotted in Cochrane Ranche.

According to the Town,  a black bear was spotted late Thursday morning on the trail behind the RancheHouse. Alberta Fish & Wildlife have been notified. Please stay alert and follow these tips:

Top Four Bear-Smart Tips:

- Put carts out only on collection morning

- Remove food sources (bird feeders, pet waste, fruit)

- Keep dogs leashed

- Carry bear spray

Bears often are more active at this time of year, and push closer to human settlements as they seek to consume the ripe berries from fruit trees.
