Construction finally began on the estimated $45 million aquatic/curling centre March 26, with Cochrane Mayor Ivan Brooker issuing a fundraising challenge for residents to raise another $100,000 by April 30.

Through community contributions and sponsorships, the facility has set a goal at $10.6 million to be raised through the town’s Rock the Waves campaign. Currently, approximately $4.5 million has been gathered in contributions from local residents and businesses.

On May 8, a community event will be held to celebrate the progress of construction, as well as to determine if Mayor Brooker’s challenge has been met.

“When we show the construction site to our federal and provincial supporters, it’s also an opportunity for the community to show how excited they are about this project,” said Brooker in a recent press release.

“We are working together as a community to get this done.”
