The countdown is on for the 2013 ATCO Gas Cochrane WinterFest.

Cochranites — and their neighbours — should bundle up and head down to the Cochrane Lions Rodeo Park on Jan. 25-26 for the seasonal celebration, which features lots of wintertime fun.

Hosted by the Cochrane and Area Events Society (CAES), the festival will kick off with a sound-and-light show and haybale maze on Friday night. Then, on Saturday, festival-goers can head down to the park for even more January fun.

Amber Big Plume, the 2013 Calgary Stampede Princess, will be on hand, accompanied by the “Princess Posse” — the six young winners of a colouring contest at the Morley Nakoda Elementary School.

With wagon and pony rides, bobsleigh demonstrations, crafts, a fun run around the venue and DJ Gregrrr spinning tunes, the event promises to appeal to everyone.

“Winter lasts a long time, so it’s nice to have a bit of a break,” said Ron Knowles, president of the CAES. “If you can have a hot chocolate, a hot dog and get involved in some fun activities — it’s still cold, but you’re going to have a lot more fun.”

Celebrating aside, the ATCO Gas Cochrane WinterFest is about providing a place for Cochranites to unite with each other and connect with our neighbours to the west — in Morley — and east — in Calgary.

“As our community grows, it’s important to have these community events,” said Knowles. “It keeps you in touch with your neighbours. And by linking communities, it can make a big impact economically.”

The ATCO Gas Cochrane WinterFest will run Jan. 25 from 5-8 p.m., with an admission price of $2. On Jan. 26, the winter activities get underway at noon and run through to 8 p.m., costing $5.
