Court proceedings for the 16-year-old Morley youth charged in connection with the shooting of a German tourist on Aug. 2 have been held over for a second time. The accused, who is in custody and appeared in court via CCTV, has yet to secure legal counsel, preventing the case from moving forward. The matter is scheduled to come back to Cochrane Provincial Court on Sept. 18. The boy, who cannot be identified under the Young Offenders Act is facing 14 charges including attempted murder, discharging a firearm with intent and possession of a prohibited weapon. Police were called to Highway 1A, near Morley, on Aug. 2 after the driver of an SUV was shot in the head by someone in a passing vehicle. Horst Stewin was visiting the area from Germany with his family and was taken to hospital in critical condition following the incident. He has since returned to Germany where he is recovering, but is reported to have life-altering injuries that will require extensive rehabilitation. German doctors were successful in removing the bullet from Stewin’s brain and it has been sent to Canadian authorities for ballistics testing. – with files from Amy Tucker
