The four families displaced by an early morning house fire last month in Sunset Ridge are getting further relief from community developers.
Melcor, together with its Sunset Ridge Builder group, have initiated a fire relief trust fund for the families whose homes on Sunrise View were heavily damaged by the June 22 fire.
The company, in partnership with Excel Homes, Homes by Avi, Jayman MasterBuilt and Landmark Homes, have kick-started the fund, ‘In Trust For Victims of the Sunset Ridge Fire,’ with $7,000. An account has been opened, into which donations can be made at any TD Bank.
“As integral members of our community, our builder group felt compelled to respond to the crisis in some way or another. Many residents in the community have responded with compassion and concern and there have already been efforts from neighbours to lend a helping hand. It’s very reassuring to see a community come together this way in difficult times,” said Melcor’s marketing manager, Catharina Mendonca, in a press release.
Sam Attia, general manager for Landmark Homes, shared that sentiment. “Our hearts go out to the four families affected by the fire. We are all part of the beautiful community of Sunset Ridge and coming together to help our neighbours in need is what we do,” Attia said in the release.
A Facebook group called ‘Sunset fire relief’, which had gained 133 members in the first 24 hours following the blaze, was created by community members to provide temporary relief as well. Cochrane firefighters also pledged to donate $1,000 to the families, as reported by the Eagle June 25. No one was injured as a result of the fire and all occupants, included pets, were able to exit the home safely. The cause of the fire is still undetermined, but not considered suspicious.
Funds raised will be evenly distributed among the four families.
