Doors open Cochrane

Doors will be flung open this weekend throughout the town, providing tourists and townsfolk the opportunity to take a peek into businesses and facilities.

Doors will be flung open this weekend throughout the town, providing tourists and townsfolk the opportunity to take a peek into businesses and facilities.

The annual event, hosted by the Town of Cochrane and participating businesses takes place June 9 and 10. Hours will vary for each business and can be viewed at doorsopencochrane.ca.

“When we started here, we had about a dozen participating locations – this year we have 21, so we’re thrilled at how it has grown,” said Laurie Drukier, senior manager of communications for the town.

“There are some businesses that have participated since the first year, and a lot of new ones who’ve joined this year,” she said.

Cochrane Fire Services will put the hoses out to suppress a live garbage fire – and firsthand lessons for participants to use a fire extinguisher properly.

“It’s always a big event for us … it gives people an opportunity to see what we do on a daily basis,” said Lt. Jeff Avery, safety codes officer for the fire department, adding that tours, trucks and hot dogs will be on the to-do list for their tours 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both event days.

“We will be doing brewery tours, touring about 10 people at a time,” said Chris Heier with participating business Half Hitch Brewing, adding that people will have to book tours ahead of time at their website.

“Right now, we don’t officially run brewery tours so this is an opportunity for people to check us out before we start doing tours and tastings later this month.”
