Residents of some Cochrane neighbourhoods took to social media this week, complaining of foul-smelling water coming out of their taps. Some said their water tasted like dirt, or “swampy.”

Throughout the first week of the emergency response to the sewage leak of Oct.21 at Riverfront Park, Mayor Jeff Genung, CAO Mike Derricott and Deputy Director of Emergency Management Shawn Polley held news conferences where they reiterated daily that the Town’s water is safe to drink and had been all along.

On Friday the Town’s Director of Operation Services Shane Hubl said his team had received three calls regarding the taste and odor of water.

“In response to each inquiry, an operator was sent to investigate. We were able to confirm that there were no concerns with our water quality,” he said.

“Throughout the water and wastewater incident, we stepped up our water quality testing. All bacteriological samples that are collected in Cochrane are submitted to Alberta Health Services’ lab for testing,” he added.

“AHS was closely monitoring our sampling during the incident, and we are proud to say that we did not fail a single sample – meaning our water remained safe to drink throughout the event.”
