RCMP

Cochrane RCMP have charged Ian Cecil, 38, and Hayden Cecil, 45 - both of Morley - with Tuesday's attempted bank robbery.

Ian was charged with robbery, resisting arrest, using an imitation firearm in the commission of an offence and hostage taking. Hayden was charged with robbery and has been released from custody, but will attend court in Airdrie on Mar. 5.

Ian has been remanded in custody until Mar. 5 with court in Airdrie

On Mar. 3 Cochrane RCMP received a complaint of an attempted bank robbery at the Royal Bank of Canada in Cochrane on 130 1 Avenue.

Witnesses reported that a man told a client that he had a gun. The suspect then went to the teller and stated that he wanted to rob the bank.

Police arrived within seconds of receiving the complaint. Eyewitnesses directed police to the suspect who was taken into custody a block away.

A conducted energy weapon was deployed when the suspect failed to follow commands in this high risk incident. The man was taken to the Cochrane RCMP detachment where he was checked on by Emergency Medical Services. He is now being held pending a Judicial Interim Release Hearing. A second man was also taken into custody.

The investigation is ongoing although alcohol and drug use are believed to have contributed to this offence.
