E. coli scare hits Alberta

Albertans, and anyone who consumes beef in North America for that matter, are up in arms over the recent E. coli crisis, prompting the largest recall of beef in Canadian history.

Albertans, and anyone who consumes beef in North America for that matter, are up in arms over the recent E. coli crisis, prompting the largest recall of beef in Canadian history.

The lengthy list of stores that carry beef products from the XL Foods processing plant where the contamination may be linked to, is available at inspection.gc.ca.

Local rancher Erik Butters of Butters Ranch said that while this recent E. coli scare, which has allegedly resulted in nine cases of illness in Alberta, impacts local beef producers negatively, it needs to be resolved.

“Of course it’s very troubling when they close a plant as big as Lakeside (XL plant near Brooks) . . . but they need to get to the bottom of this,” said Butters.

Despite the recent recalls, Premier Alison Redford said Alberta beef is safe and that she stands behind the province’s beef producers.
