Lindsay Firlotte is all smiles when asked about Easter Seals Camp Horizon.

“It’s better than Disneyworld!” she exclaims.

Firlotte was at Safeway today, surrounded by her mother Linda, her sister and store staff in support of Easter Seals Canada and Muscular Dystrophy Canada’s partnership to raise funds at Safeway stores for the Help Feed Ability campaign.

All proceeds raised will be donated equally to Easter Seals Canada and Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

The 21-year-old Cochrane resident, who lives with a rare mitochondrial disorder and uses a wheelchair, has attended Camp Horizon since she was eight years old.

Her mother, Linda, said the camp offers unique programs and opportunities for children, youth and adults living with disabilities they wouldn’t normally have. She is also in charge of fund development at Camp Horizon.

Linda said the camp has had a strong impact on Lindsay by improving her confidence through the camp’s physical activities such as whitewater rafting.

“She does things she never thought she’d do,” Linda said proudly.

Every year, 1,200 campers with disabilities traverse treetop rope courses, play on a giant swing, rock climb and other activities designed to challenge them.

Funds raised for Easter Seals Canada will support the Safeway Feeding Ability Program and camp experiences for children living with disabilities and their families.

The Muscular Dystrophy Canada funds will be directed towards education and awareness of the importance of good nutrition and hydration, and the unique considerations for Canadians living with neuromuscular disorders.

Camp Horizon is located on 62 acres in Kananaskis Country near Bragg Creek.

The camp specializes in outdoor- and adventure-based programs for children, youth and adults with disabilities and medical conditions.

The campaign runs June 12-28 at participating Safeway stores.
