Enjoying the 'art of stillness'

Needing a break from the rush of modern society? Water Valley Church Events Centre is holding “The Art of Stillness” – a one-day retreat designed to give time to slow down and “savour the riches that are all around us, all the time,” said Jeff Stockton, organizer of the event.

Meditation and mindfulness retreats are nothing new. What’s different about Stockton’s is that it’s based on Celtic spiritual traditions – decidedly western rather than eastern.

“At its heart, the philosophy of the Celts celebrates that we are surrounded and sung to by ancient presences all the time – the sun, the moon, the flow of the rivers, the trees, the stones, the turning of the seasons, the daily flow of night and day…it celebrates a sense of belonging, a sense of place in the world.”

Meditation has been a part of Stockton’s life for 30 years, and he spent a decade studying eastern traditions in India. He notes that while it was very meaningful, he felt as if something was missing.

“There was a feeling that I needed to not so much step away from the world, but a little more embracing of it. And this is what I found in the Celtic realm.”

The day will feature storytelling and music on the Celtic harp and a variety of “simple experiences in letting ourselves savour the moment.”

There will be a flow between sitting still and gentle movement.

Participants are welcome to bring blankets, cushions, comfortable clothing, writing materials and a water bottle. Light snacks, coffee and tea will be provided.

The retreat takes place this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Water Valley Church Events Centre. The cost of the event is $100 per person. Space is limited at 15 participants maximum.
