Don’t miss the Elbow River Band as they take the stage at the Water Valley Church Events Centre on Aug. 6.
Described as an alternative-folk band, the Elbow River Band plays mostly original music that can be described as hauntingly harmonic and sometimes even dark.
The four-member band is comprised of Leanne Copithorne, her daughter Kaitlynn Smith, Brandon Smith, and Tim Jeffrey. The band uses a combination of vocals, guitar, banjo, dobro, accordion and bass.
“We play Americana/folk root music … We’re known pretty well for our harmonies, it’s a family harmony. Kaitlynn is my daughter so our voices blend well,” Copithorne explained.
“We play mostly original tunes but we do throw in some covers to give our audience some familiarity.”
Copithorne joked that a lot of the songs the band writes tend to have a “darker feel to them” so they try to throw in some “uplifting songs so it doesn’t get too depressing.”
“We have a little bit of something for everyone. Sometimes we get accused of doing songs that are like blues, or bluegrass, or Celtic, but we just do whatever we write and feel like,” Copithorne said with a laugh.
Though Copithorne herself has had a chance to perform at the Water Valley Church Events Centre, this venue will be new for the band. Everyone is excited to take the stage and put on a good show for the audience.
“It’s a really lovely building and the organizers are really lovely people to work with so we’re really looking forward to it. It should have a nice “kitchen party” type feel to it, very relaxed and a lot of fun,” Copithorne explained.
The doors open at 7 p.m. for a social hour and the show will start at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $20 each or for $25 at the door.
