Extreme hail and storm recorded in Cochrane and across Alberta

Hail the size of a hen egg was recorded in Cochrane last night, August 5, 2024, along with strong winds and heavy rain. Similarly sized hail clusters were recorded all across Alberta

On Tuesday 6 August 2024, Environment Canada issued a weather summary on yesterday’s extreme weather.

According to the report, yesterday, August 5, 2024, an area of severe thunderstorms developed over Southern Alberta, and then moved to the east. These Thunderstorms produced significant and damaging hail, strong winds and heavy rain.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has received many reports of hail damage coming out of Calgary, along with localized flooding.

According to the report, the recorded hail sizes were as follows:

PING PONG BALL SIZE IN LAKE LOUISE
 

TOONIE SIZE IN DELACOUR
 

NICKEL SIZE IN OKOTOKS
