While the numbers were down from last year, the Ag Society folks said that the second annual Cochrane Fall Fair, held at the society grounds Sept. 19-21, was a success.
“We really did have a successful fair and the weather was phenomenal,” said Ag Society president Brian Birchall, noting the evidence was in the vast number of ‘smiling faces and tired volunteers’.
“One of the purposes of the event was to showcase the facility — which is primarily an equine facility.”
With a host of events – including mini chucks, equine events, lawnmower races, a trade show, vendors, a community garage sale, a mechanical bull, a street curling rink and jackpot team roping — ongoing, event organizers and attendees were disappointed that there were no midway rides.
“We booked the same midway company as last year and they cancelled on us at the last minute,” explained Birchall.
“In the end, we weren’t able to book another midway in time, but we were able to bring in a rock climbing wall, a Euro-bungee and bouncy castles.”
The midway company allegedly cancelled other Southern Alberta dates, as well — including the Airdrie Family Fall Fair, which ran Sept. 12-14.
Birchall said the event had ‘an amazing group of sponsors’ this year, including title sponsor Excel Homes, as well as volunteer high school students from St. Tim’s.
The Ag Society fair committee will meet in the coming weeks to look at putting together a 2015 fall fair.
Some 8,000 people attended the 2013 fall fair; the final number count for this year’s fair was not available in time for deadline.
