For the Spademans, volunteering with the Cochrane Food Drive is more than just doing an activity as a family, it’s helping people in need.
The Jamie and Jodi Spademan and their four children have been volunteering with the Helping Hands Society of Cochrane & Area’s food drive for the past five years.
“We think this is a great community and in order to build community, everyone has to be a part of it and volunteer a little bit,” said Jamie, the father of the family.
“When they ask for help, we just jump in and say we’re available,” he continued.
The endeavour has left a lasting impression on their children as well.
“I like it because it’s fun because you can just get out and talk with people,” said Raedyn, the youngest in the family.
“She says she collects the most food in the family because she’s the cutest,” Jamie added with a laugh.
For Breneks, the second oldest of the bunch, the food drive is way for him to help those in need and do a good deed.
“I like going house to house and you can see people you haven’t seen in a long time, and helping people who don’t have enough food,” said Trenton, the second youngest.
Mikenna, the oldest of the children, enjoys the opportunity to help others and the community.
All kids are in agreement that they will have their families participate when they grow up and have children of their own.
“It’s an extremely well-organized and efficient event, there is a need out there and sometimes people just need a little encouragement – you knock on their door and just say ‘Can you give us a couple of food items?’ and the response is overwhelmingly positive in this community,” Jamie said.
