Lights, camera, wilderness!
Bragg Creek & Kananaskis Outdoor Recreation (BCKOR) is presenting the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival (VIMFF) 2014 Best of the Fest at the Bragg Creek Community Centre Sept. 6.
One of the founders of BCKOR, Shaun Peter, said that this is the third year in a row they would be hosting the event.
Peter said he had helped run the Banff Mountain Film Festival in Regina and thought something like that would be a really good fit for the communities of Bragg Creek and Kananaskis.
“Everyone here is very connected with the wilderness and I thought it would be a good opportunity for everyone to get together and celebrate that,” he said.
Peter said the VIMFF Best of the Fest takes around 10 of the best films of the festival and tours them around different parts of Canada.
One of those is North of the Sun, which Peter described as a film about two young Norwegians who decide to spend nine months of the winter surfing in a completely isolated area north of the Arctic Circle. He said it has won over 50 prestigious awards around the world.
Another is And Then We Swam, about two guys with zero rowing experience who decided to join a race with no support boat – and then disaster strikes.
The event will also be having a silent auction, which includes items such as a rafting trip and an ice-climbing course.
Peter said 100 per cent of the profits from the auction go to the Moose Mountain Bike Trail Society and Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association.
“Both of those groups are involved in building and maintaining trails in the area and they still have a lot of work to do from the flood of 2013,” said Peter.
He added that there had been around 350 people at the event each year, and last year they raised $3,010 for trails.
Peter also added that they are hoping that people would come out to the festival and spend some money in the community and help out some of the business that are still being effected from the 2013 flood.
“Canmore and Banff get all of the attention, but we have a gorgeous valley behind us with hiking and biking trails. We’re trying to highlight it out here,” he said.
Doors are at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $14 and can be purchased online at bckor.ca or at Bragg Creek Family Foods.
