Four Fireside School students raised $300 from March 22 to March 23 for the Canadian Tire Jumpstart charity to help get kids into sports.
“Everyone should get a chance to play sports,” said Bennett Humphreys one of the four students.
The students were inspired by a project-based learning initiative designed to teach their class social values and how to get involved with their community.
Last week, students were asked to think of a problem they wanted to solve and were tasked with creating an action plan.
Luke Robinson, Carter Harrington, Bennett Humphreys, and Enzo Fernandez took their assignment and decided to act on their plan.
On March 22, the group went door-to-door in their community of Riversong asking for donations and raised more than $120.
“We thought if we got $5 or $10 our minds would be blown, but then we made $120,” said Luke Robinson, another student of the group.
The following day the group decided to set up a bottle drive to continue fundraising.
On Sunday, the group dropped off donations totalling $296 to Cochrane's Canadian Tire.
“It feels like my students are energized to make change,” said the group's teacher Katerina Iverson.
“I’m so proud.”
Parents of the class were invited to a celebration of the learning project on April 3 and 4, which provided them an opportunity to see all the students' action plans.
