Bring your own bags, pails and be ready to dig some dirt this Saturday.

Free compost, up to 30kg per family, is being offered up this May 11 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Cochrane RancheHouse overflow parking lot (along RancheHouse Road, next to Highway 22).

This offering is a result of the town's organics composting program – through which Cochrane is getting a little greener each year.

"We started this in 2017, so this is the third year," said Fabrizio Bertolo, manager of waste and recycling for the town. "The first year was a little bit slow ... there were over 1000 people last year."

Bertolo said the jump in popularity between the two years means quantity restrictions. Each family is permitted to take home 30kg of compost that is "very rich in nutrients" (equivalent of two buckets). Staff will be on site to provide instruction on how to mix the rich compost with soil.
