Get active this May

The Spray Lake Sawmill Family Sports Centre is in the middle of its annual Physical Literacy Challenge and is looking for more participants.

The all-ages activity challenges people to step out of their comfort zone and try new physical activities throughout the month of May. Registration for the challenge is $10 per person.

“So if you’re normally a yoga person, we’re tying to get you to try other activities to see what else in the facility you might like,” explained Shawna Kerr-Smith, events and marketing co-ordinator for the centre.

Participants will receive a passport full of activities to choose from – once the activity is completed, participants will receive a stamp for their passport. Only 10 activities need to be completed for participants to receive a prize at the end of the challenge.

“We’re going to have a kids’ passport as well as an adult passport, below 14 years and 14 years and over – so the kids’ one will be more directed at stuff that they’ll like such as run, jump, and throw type stuff,” Kerr-Smith explained.

You do not have to be a member with the sports centre to take part in the activity, though Kerr-Smith said it is an excellent time to look at memberships.

“We’re trying to encourage people who aren’t members with our facility or who normally don’t use our facility to try out since it’s the perfect month – if they sign up for the challenge, they can get a pass that lasts until the end of May at 50 per cent off,” Kerr-Smith said.

Though participation for the challenge is down from last year, Kerr-Smith said those taking part are loving it so far.

“People are really getting into it and experiencing stuff they haven’t done before so it’s just a good excuse to try something new.”
