Cochrane council has approved the first of many rezonings to come in the Greystone development.

A 7.5-acre parcel north of the Spray Lakes Sawmills Family Sports Centre will soon be home to a commercial strip including a grocery store, convenience store and gas bar, Burnswest Properties Ltd. development vice-president Josh Hagen told council March 28.

Hagen said while they are a "few days away" from naming which grocer it will be, he's "confident the sale's going through."

Mayor and council shared their enthusiasm about the project and the future of the community.

"It's exciting to see a land use come forward and some action down in the Greystone area," said Mayor Jeff Genung. "It's exciting to see the changes down there and I look forward to see what's going to be announced, hopefully soon, and what grocery announcement."

Councillors also took the time to stress the importance of pedestrian crossings and traffic control due to its proximity to the rec centre.

Questions were also asked about the proposed traffic circle in the plans.

Hagen reassured council that traffic feasibility studies were completed and the traffic circle was deemed best fit by the engineers.

Council will have to approve the final design in an upcoming meeting. The March 28 decision, the mayor reassured, was simply to redesignate the zoning of the parcel from industrial to commercial.

Administration said this is the second land-use amendment to come before council regarding Greystone so far. The storm pond was the first.

"First step is to complete the storm pond, then we have to see a development permit," senior planner Candace Banack said. "Within the next year, you'll be seeing movement on this."
