Shred your paper. Help feed those in need.

That’s the concept behind the Cochrane Eco Centre’s “Community Shred” Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 50 Griffin Industrial Pt.

Staff at the Cochrane Eco Centre invite anyone looking to securely destroy confidential documents to the event at the cost of donating a non-perishable food item to the Cochrane Activettes.

Sharon Howland, the Town of Cochrane’s manager of waste and recycling, said the centre has never provided shredding before but the event came about after multiple people were looking for the service.

“People are always concerned about security, so they often hang on to paper for years and years and years, but then they call us and ask us about shredding and we tell them we don’t have any.”

Howland said everything shredded is baled and immediately sent to a pulp mill.

Super Save Group, the town’s waste disposal service, will then dispose of the shredded material.

The event is part of Waste Reduction Week, which runs from Oct. 19 to 24.

The week, delivered the third week of October each year, was developed by a coalition of 13 recycling councils and sister organizations from across Canada. The program’s goal is to inform Canadians about the environmental and social ramifications of wasteful practices, according to the Recycling Council of Alberta.
