Bringing Christmas to Cochrane families in need, one hamper at a time.
The annual Helping Hampers campaign, hosted by Cochrane High School, kicked off this Tuesday and will be collecting donations for three Cochrane families while also accepting donations for the Cochrane Activettes Share Your Christmas.
“Times are tough with the economy and some people just need extra help … even $5 will help,” said Devon Burfoott-Lobo, 17-year-old Cochrane High leadership student.
Leadership students, who wanted to attend WE Day, brainstormed the initiative four years ago – youth who attend the national event “buy” their admission by participating in one global activity and one local activity.
WE Day started in 2007, evolving from a single event into a series of 14 stadium-sized events in Canada, the United States and the UK, hosting a variety of keynotes speakers. The event was hosted in Calgary earlier this year with Cochrane High students in attendance who left feeling “inspired.”
The Helping Hampers campaign is one of the activities that permits attendance to the event.
“This (campaign) gets us all involved and it is important to help out others – it is a confidence boost,” said Summer Gibbons, 17-year-old leadership student.
The campaign runs from Nov. 29 to Dec. 9 with donations to be collected and accepted at Cochrane High, located at 529 Fourth Ave.
