Heroes can come from where you least expect them, but on Sept. 13 and 14 in Bragg Creek, look up.
Redwood Meadows Firefighters Association will host its seventh annual ‘Heroes In The Sky’ fundraiser to raise $10,000 towards its health and wellness programs for next year.
Gary Robertson, association president, said the event isn’t just for the firefighters, but everyone in Redwood Meadows and Bragg Creek.
“It’s an opportunity to get the whole community together for one final send off to summer.”
The fundraiser kicks off 11 a.m. Saturday with a licensed barbecue and live music. At noon, firefighters climb to the roof of Bragg Creek Foods, where they will camp out for 30 hours. From noon to 4 p.m. there will be face painting, fire extinguisher training, acrobatic performers and more activities. Live music and the barbecue will continue throughout the day until midnight.
On Sunday morning, the festivities begin with a 9 a.m. ‘sunrise’ yoga session led by the Yoga Within The Heart studio. Yoga will be followed at 10 a.m. with a pancake breakfast and then live music and barbecue starting around 11 a.m. The same events will be offered from noon to 4 p.m. and the event wraps up around 6 p.m. when the firefighters come down off the roof.
The Rural Man Van from the Prostate Cancer Centre will be on hand Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. During the clinic, van staff can test 90 people via blood tests, so men of the community are invited to receive a free test.
Redwood Meadows Emergency Services responded to 400 calls last year.
