A Sundre man is dead as a result of a single vehicle crash on the TransCanada Highway Oct. 23.

Cochrane RCMP responded at about midnight to the accident, which occurred near Scott Lake Hill.

Witnesses that came upon the collision located the male on the road, with the vehicle on its roof, according to a statement from the RCMP.

The male, a 31-year-old from Sundre, was the lone occupant of the truck, a 2007 Dodge Ram that was travelling westbound down the highway.

An ambulance transported the driver to the hospital in Calgary in life-threatening condition, where he died upon arrival, said Sgt. Audrey Robinson.

The assistance of STARS Air Ambulance was requested, but fog prevented the helicopter from landing. The name of the deceased is not being released.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the collision.

The vehicle of a missing woman has been recovered on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation.

The van belonging to Sara Coates was found Oct. 22, as members of the Cochrane RCMP General Investigation Section acted on a tip they received from a resident of the First Nation.

“The vehicle appeared to be abandoned on an isolated road near the Nakoda Lodge,” said Cpl. Mel Calahasen of the Cochrane RCMP detachment. “We suspect the vehicle has been there for a long period of time — at least a year.”

Coates, 32, has been missing since August 2012. She was last seen in Calgary, and is believed to have been in the Radium-Columbia Valley area between August and November of that year.

Both Calgary Police Service and Columbia Valley RCMP have investigated her disappearance, prior to the recovery of the 1992 blue Chevrolet Astro van. Cochrane RCMP and other units conducted a physical search of the area surrounding the vehicle, but no evidence of Coates was found, said Calahasen.

Although investigation into her disappearance is ongoing, Calahasen said the matter is not considered suspicious.

Coates has red hair and blue eyes, and is described as standing about 5-ft.-2 and 110 lbs.

She was travelling with a couple of cats and a dog.

Anyone with information about the van or the disappearance is asked to call Cochrane RCMP detachment at 403-851-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
