Horse sale to take place in rural Cochrane

Those in the market for a new Western pleasure horse will have a rare opportunity to attend a local horse auction next week.

Those in the market for a new Western pleasure horse will have a rare opportunity to attend a local horse auction next week.

Hermann Baur of Hermann’s Ranching will be hosting what he hopes is the first annual Cochrane and area horse sale at his outdoor arena, located 10 minutes north of Cochrane, at the intersection of Twp 274 and Hwy 22 June 24.

“We’re hoping for a really good turnout so we can make this an annual event,” said the longtime area horseman, who said the closest horse sale for Cochrane horse folk is in Innisfail, Alta. — about 90 minutes northeast.

“I’ll bet within the immediate Cochrane area there are at least 15 horse barns.”

Baur, who also owns another horse ranch in Water Valley said this sale will feature around 35 ‘gentle, quiet horses’ — mostly registered quarter horses, paint horses and some ‘grey’ horses (unregistered horses).

While his family used to also run elk and buffalo, the business these days is saddle horses – namely quarter horses, hunter/jumpers and some kid’s ponies.

Viewing and sale registration begins at noon, where a roping and obstacle course will be set up.

The sale runs from 5-10 p.m. and will be auctioneered by award-winning Rimbey cowboy, Dean Edge, who will be assisted by announcer and brother, Tim Edge.

Singer/songwriter and cowboy Ivan Danes will be on deck to perform some of his music and a food concession will be set up, serving bacon-wrapped corn and beef on a bun in true cowpoke style.

Baur said door prizes, including halter shanks and lead ropes, will be up for grabs.
