Council approved a land use bylaw Sept. 22 permitting single and two-dwelling units to be constructed in two phases of Stage 2 in the Sunset Ridge community.
The amendment was brought forward by area developer, Melcor Developments, and will allow a mix of housing options as part of phase 20 and 22 of the second stage of development.
Originally, phase 20 permitted only single-detached dwellings, while phase 22 single and two-dwelling units. The approved amendment ensures that varying types of housing products with differing price points would be available in each phase.
Within phase 20, 4.72 acres were amended, and in phase 22, 4.55 acres where adjusted.
Council also gave first reading and established a public hearing date for Oct. 14 for a bylaw that would designate a pair of areas in Jumping Pound Ridge as park and environmental zones, reducing the potential of land uses in these two regions.
One of the areas of land in question is found in Phase 1 of Jumping Pound’s development, while the other is in Phase 2.
If council ultimately approves this designation, the town would take ownership of these two parcels following a review by the Cochrane Planning Commission, possibly as early as this month.
Oct. 14’s public hearing on this matter will be in council chambers at 6 p.m.
Council proclaimed October to be Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Cochrane following a delegation from Ralph Spanier, a volunteer with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) for the Prairies/Northwest Territories region.
Spanier said the CBCF estimates that approximately 24,000 women (and about 210 men) would be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, with around 5,000 dying from the disease.
With approval from council on this matter, the town will post the proclamation on its website and it will be advertised as part of Municipal Matters, which runs weekly in the Cochrane Eagle.
