Former Cochrane Ringette volunteer president on trial

The trial of Shelley Davidson, 40, began this week in a Calgary courtroom, where the Cochranite is on trial for allegedly bilking her former employer Silverado Oilfield Ventures out of more than a million dollars.

Davidson, a former bookkeeper for the company, has pleaded not guilty to charges of fraud and theft over $5,000 in 2013 in connection with a Blackfalds RCMP investigation into missing money at Silverado. The company went into receivership in October of that same year.

The trial is scheduled to continue until Sept. 1.

Three-and-a-half year prison sentence for murder

A Morley resident has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for beating his father to death and attacking his sister in 2015.

Tristan Wesley, 29, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in March for the July 2015 fatal beating of his dad, 55-year-old Myles McLean. Wesley also pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm for a related attack on his sister (who remains unnamed). Last week, court sentenced Wesley to three and a half years in prison – which includes credit for time served. He will remain behind bars for two years, followed by 18 months of probation.

According to media sources, Wesley and his father got into an argument after he was cut off from purchasing drinks at the Stoney Nakoda Casino. Court heard Wesley’s sister was driving the men home when the initial attack occurred in the vehicle.

The sibling stopped the car and Wesley beat McLean on the side of the road. When the sister tried to stop the aggression, she was also punched and dragged by Wesley until McLean intervened. Court heard Wesley then turned his aggression back onto his dad as his sister drove away and called 911 from a nearby overpass.

Police found McLean with fatal injuries on the roadside a short time later. An autopsy concluded the 55-year-old died of blunt force trauma.
