Jacket Racket set for this Saturday

As the winter season and the cold temperatures that accompany it creeps up on us, it’s time to start pulling out those warm mitts and cozy coats.

As the winter season and the cold temperatures that accompany it creeps up on us, it’s time to start pulling out those warm mitts and cozy coats.

And all Cochrane area residents will have a chance to combat the winter weather, thanks to the 2013 Jacket Racket, an initiative hosted by the Cochrane Family and Community Support Services (FCSS).

The event, which recycles lightly-used winter wear, is set to run Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Cochrane Alliance Church.

The Jacket Racket will offer more than warm coats, also providing mittens, gloves, hats, snowpants, boots and more to those who are facing financial challenges.

In the past, the event has acquired up to about 500 pieces of clothing, said Annemarie Tocher, coordinator of community resources for FCSS. Traditionally, the Jacket Racket draws between 250-300 clothing hunters.

Any excess clothing will be donated to other organizations that identify a need. In previous years, event leftovers have been taken to the Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre.

Tocher said those who donated clothing to the cause will have access to the clothing racks at the Jacket Racket as well — all in an effort to diminish consumption in the community.

The event will run in conjunction with the Parent Link Centre’s Family Celebration, which will offer children’s activities and refreshment to attendees.
