The 29th Annual Kananaskis 100-Mile Relay Race is taking place June 20.
Registration for the event is now closed, but organizers would like to remind participants of the race’s rundown.
The race begins at 6 a.m. in Longview. Prior to their anticipated start, runners must check in at the station at the beginning of their assigned leg. Runners must present a completed waiver and check-in form to the race official at the station.
Participants under the age of 18 must have the waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian. The runner’s race bib will be provided at the time of check in.
The race route follows Highway 40 over the Highwood Pass – the highest paved road in Canada topping out at almost 2,200 metres elevation. The relay consists of 10 legs of varying distances from 9.5 to 18 kilometres.
“We attract runners of all abilities – from guys who are winning national championship races to recreational runners just out for fun,” said organizer Cheryl Lowery.
She said the relay is unique in its terrain but that it is not an ultra-marathon event. “Some people who run more than one leg make it a longer event, but it’s not designed that way. Its niche is the relay over the mountain component.”
The event is a major fundraiser for Hostelling International’s Canada Pacific Mountain Region. The Pacific Mountain Region is part of the International Youth Hostel Federation’s network of over 4,000 hostels in more than 80 countries.
