Cochrane and Area Events Society (CAES) announced this year’s Cochrane Labour Day Parade marshals to be the Kimmett family.
In a press release sent Aug. 15 from CAES, parade organizers chose the Kimmetts to honour the family’s efforts in organizing their annual charity pond hockey event, the Kimmett Cup, and the amount of money the event has raised over the years.
The Kimmett Cup will be celebrating its eighth year next January at Mitford Pond and Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre. Over the course of the Kimmett Cup’s history, over $700,000 has been raised for local and global charities.
A number of organizations have benefited from the fundraising efforts, such as Right to Play, which has received around $400,000. Children’s Wish has also been a recipient, with $257,000 total, as has the Lindsay Virtual Human Project, receiving $25,000.
As the Labour Day Parade marshals, over 700 participants and around 70 horses in various floats and groups will accompany the Kimmett family.
The Cochrane Pipe Band, the Calgary Stampede and British Army are just a few of the entrants in this year’s event. Other entrants include the Girl Guides and Cochrane Glee Club.
Breakfast and barbecue events will take place at various spots around town.
The parade route is reversed through downtown this year, heading west onto Railway Street and looping back onto First Street, before heading south on River Avenue. The reason for the change was aimed at easing traffic flow through the area earlier in the day.
Registration is now closed, but late parade entries can be emailed to [email protected].
The parade, which first hit Cochrane’s streets in 1968, takes place Sept. 7 and commences at 10:30 a.m.
The duration of the parade is around two hours, and boasts over 1,000 participants and over 12,000 spectators.
