The smoke has cleared, but friends of the Eklund family wish to remind Cochranites that the battle is far from over for the cattle ranching family who lost their home to a Jan. 8 house fire.

Longtime family friend, Mary Robinson, is putting a call out to Cochrane and area businesses, individuals and members of the local ranching community to take part in the May 24 fundraiser at Madden Community Hall.

“We’re looking for small and large-ticket items for the live and silent auction,” said Robinson. “Any community members who can volunteer any items are welcomed to do so.”

Lindsay and Joy Eklund continue to live in a mobile home unit on their working cattle ranch, located south of Cochrane along Towers Trail, as they prepare to rebuild their home.

The fundraiser seeks to raise money to help the family replace items that insurance won’t cover in the rebuild.

“They’re just wonderful people,” said Robinson, who went to high school, followed by nursing school with Joy and has remained a close friend for 45 years.

“Joy is a midwife (founder of Cochrane Community Midwives) and she’s brought a great deal to the community…I just felt like I couldn’t stand by and not do anything to help.”

The event is a potluck dinner, beginning at 6 p.m. No RSVPs are necessary, said Robinson — who is hoping for a full house that evening.

Following the dinner, the crowd will be entertained by live entertainment, as well as the live and silent auction.
