A Cochrane man’s request to have a $1,131 property-tax penalty rescinded was denied by council July 8.

Citing health concerns, Rasoul (Ross) Hedayat, owner of Sanam Alberta Ltd., made the request, saying his health issues have forced him into the hospital on four occasions, and that he has been unable to pay the additional penalty.

Hedayat was to pay $4,206 in property taxes by June 30, 2012 (which he has since paid), and accumulated a total of $1,131 on three separate deadline dates.

Councillor Ivan Davies echoed the sentiment of council on the matter, saying that although he empathized with Hedayat’s situation, it was just one of those situations where the town cannot be held responsible for any individual or business’s taxes.

“It’s not a good precedent to be set,” said Davies.
