Mayors Annual Golf Tournament raises $104,920 for Legion

This Friday, Mayor Jeff Genung and the Cochrane Legion, Branch 15 members hosted a cheque presentation ceremony to celebrate and present the $104,920 in funding for the Cochrane Legion group dedicated towards supporting veterans.

The fourth annual Mayor's invitational golf tournament set a new record for fundraising, which was given in the form of a cheque to The Royal Canadian Legion Cochrane Branch this Friday, July 26 at a special presentation ceremony and barbecue

"This community leans in and steps up anytime there's a worthy cause," said Mayor Jeff Genung at the ceremony on Friday evening. "It was overwhelming to see the support we got at an early stage when we announced the tournament."

On July 22, the Mayor's golf tournament took place at the Links of GlenEagles, raising a total of $104,920 in funding for the Cochrane Legion Branch 15, Men of Vision. The group was chosen as the tournament recipient in order to enhance its hall and facilities, which are made for the veterans who have selflessly served our community and country.

Legion president Brad Ross was grateful for the generous contribution.

"Part of what my model has been, is to rejuvenate this place, get new young blood in here and make it warm and welcoming to our veterans, their family members, to our members and to the general public," he said.

Ross explained how the recent funding will help further improve the business aspect of the Cochrane Legion, enabling them to further support their volunteers and continue growing with the community.

Mayor Genung emphasized that citizens of the town should be proud of themselves for the amount they were able to raise at the recent invitation, and that it goes a long way towards improving the community.

"The community needs to be proud, and the Legion, it was an easy choice," said Genung, explaining why the Legion was chosen as the recipient this year. "I hope that this goes a ways in improving a lot of what they were hoping to do."
