Four of Cochrane’s bravest received the provincially recognized Alberta Emergency Services Medal (AESM) and Bronze Star Rosette for their years of commitment and service keeping communities in town safe at a recent ceremony.
A presentation held by Cochrane Fire Services recognized the important milestones achieved by each of the four members. Mayor Jeff Genung and Airdrie-Cochrane MLA Peter Guthrie attended the event to present the medals and congratulate the recipients.
The AESM commends emergency service personnel involved in supporting response, prevention, and preparedness who have committed over 12 years of service in Alberta. Recipients are also nominated for a subsequent bar at 22, 32, and 40 years of service, ranked at bronze, silver, and gold, respectively.
On Nov. 2, the Town of Cochrane recognized retired administrative assistant Dot Gills, fire prevention officer Jay Wieliczco, and senior fire fighter Joe Zelmer for their 22 years of service.
In addition, 1st class firefighter Mike Monaghan was recognized for his 12 years of service.
“They represent extended years of service and commitment,” Zelmer said. “They are important because it helps us recognize those of us who have been there repeatedly in times of need.”
Although Gills was honoured by Cochrane Fire Services when she retired earlier this year, she noted she was pleased to have contributed to keeping the community safe alongside first responders in the community.
“I was grateful to end my working life in service to the community,” Gills said. “I admire and respect my front-line first responders with all my heart.”
As a resident and parent in Cochrane, Zelmer affirms residents he will do his best to continue keeping Cochrane safe in the years to come.
“I live here and my children go to school here,” Zelmer said. “I want to do my part in helping [our] community.”
Although it will be another 10 years before the 32-year bar is due for Zelmer, he assured residents that he will continue serving Cochranites in the years to come.
“I will continue to serve to the best of my ability with empathy and leadership to help protect us all,” Zelmer said.
Though she moved away after her retirement, Gills adds that Cochrane will forever have a special place in her heart and added “I wish it great success.”
“It is such an honour to work alongside such a dedicated group of individuals who are committed to serving our community,” said Fire Chief Shawn Polley in a press release by the Town of Cochrane. “I would like to personally congratulate everyone for their incredible accomplishment and remarkable years of service.”
