The rumble of Outhouses of all shapes and sizes filled Main Street in Cochrane on a crisp fall morning Sept. 27.
That rumble was particularly loud because Heavenly Outhouse had the most entries they have ever had in the 14-year history of the Outhouse Races – 25 with a combined total of 125 racers.
There was everything from the Swedish Chef to bank robbers to local politicians – you name it.
Although the weather was cool, the competition was heated, but all in the name of raising money for the Cochrane Activettes Food Bank.
Karrie Peace from Heavenly Outhouse organizes the event and said she was thrilled with the amount of outhouses that turned out.
At the time of the interview, she said they had raised a total of $10,867, but they were still counting donations that were coming in – including the money raised by Legacy Guitar and Coffee House who raffled off a guitar.
The Bethany Care Centre took home the prize for funniest and donated half of their $500 winnings to the Activettes, with the other half being put towards planting flowers at the centre.
The Wildrose Party junior team took home the top prize for the fastest and donated all $500 of their prize money to the Activettes.
The local RBC Royal Bank branch raised the most money for their registration fee at $875, in addition to the head office donating $5,000.
Peace said she has already started thinking about next year and is hoping to convince CBC Television personality Rick Mercer to come out and ride in an outhouse for the 15th annual races.
“I want to start a movement now and get him to come out for next year,” said Peace with a laugh.
