For a town that prides itself on its downtown appeal, the former Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) building located at the base of Cochrane Hill off Highway 1A that has been vacant for more than a year is a sore sight.
According to the town, that site is in the midst of a transfer of title with the final payment scheduled for no later than Dec. 31, 2017.
Staff are aware of the graffiti and are “taking steps to remove it” and will be removing the old signage soon.
The KFC is part of what is known as the old town hall site, was sold for a $2.75 million and is owned by Madlee Developments Ltd.
The town used funds from that sale to go toward projects outlined in Cochrane’s 10-year financial strategy.
Council awarded the developer based on a proposal they felt met the town’s criteria for that site, set forth in 2015: that it include an attractive and inviting gateway to Historic Downtown; that it meets the town’s western heritage guidelines and unique character; that it is a mixed-use site that promotes walkability and connectivity; and that it supports a revitalization of the East End businesses.
The Eagle last reported that construction was to begin by last fall.
