The riverbanks of the Bow River near Jim Uffelmann Memorial Park are set to undergo restoration starting mid-May.

From May through June, contractors will install natural stabilization measures along approximately 485 metres of riverbank to help restore and protect the area from ongoing erosion. Temporary fencing will be installed to safeguard newly planted native vegetation and support natural regeneration.

Visitors are asked to follow posted signage and stay within designated areas to ensure the project’s success.

Work will begin at the west end of the park, near the River Avenue parking lot, and proceed eastward. The overall impact on park users is expected to be minimal.

“We’d like to thank residents for their patience and continued support as we carry out this work,” said Michelle Delorme, director of Parks and Active Living. “Thank you for helping us protect the riverbank by respecting the fenced-off areas and allowing nature the time it needs to recover.”

The restoration follows recommendations from environmental consultants EDS Group, which conducted a detailed environmental assessment of the park two years ago.

“The assessment confirmed notable erosion along the riverbank and recommended targeted remediation,” said Delorme. “Council reviewed the findings and approved this essential work last year to preserve the long-term environmental health of the riverbank.”

Jim Uffelmann Memorial Park is a 10-acre green space along the Bow River and is among Cochrane’s most visited public areas. Throughout the project, the parking lot, pathway and off-leash dog area will remain open. The site will be monitored during the season to track progress and promote long-term ecological health.
