On thin ice

Town of Cochrane officials wish to remind Cochranites to be mindful of their safety responsibilities this winter season.

Snow shoveling and ice safety are of top priority at this time of the year — and the responsibility remains with home and business owners to care for their sidewalks and driveways within 48 hours of a snowfall.

Snow that is removed must be placed on private property (lawns) and is not to be placed on public property, including alleyways, roads and pathways.

Ice skating is permitted at two locations; the locations — the Tim Bannister Memorial Rink in the East End and Mitford Pond — are not yet safe for public use. Once ice has built up, town crews will inspect for safety and notice/signage will be given/displayed.

Storm water ponds and the Bow River are not yet safe for skating or any other winter activity; storm water ponds are particularly dangerous as the surface may appear solid but storm water is still being released underneath from snowfall, snowmelt, road clearing and salting operations.

Within a 12-month period, the initial fine for failing to shovel your sidewalks is $150, second is $200 and third will cost $250. For updates on the skating conditions at both outdoor locations, call 403-851-2552.
